This is a very auspicious week, as we celebrated one of the biggest Muslim holidays – Eid Al Fitr, and Multiculturalism day!

Eid Al-Fitr signifies the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. This makes Eid one of my favorite holidays in the Muslim calendar, because it is a time to celebrate personal growth with our friends and family after a month of fasting and spiritual rejuvenation.

Multiculturalism day is about celebrating diversity, and the beauty of cultures cooperating to prosper together. In Canada, we are all an example of the amazing things multiculturalism can lead to, and are world leaders in celebrating the differences that make us such a special country.

Celebrations like Eid and Multiculturalism day are possible in Canada because of our pluralism, and acceptance of all faiths. Canada’s success in multiculturalism can be traced back to the work of one incredible man, the late Right Honourable Pierre Elliot Trudeau. His advocacy for tolerance of all religions and minorities, regardless of origin or values contributed to religious occasions being celebrated across the country, where all Canadians can feel protected and free to express themselves.

This has led to Canada becoming recognized worldwide as a safe place for all. I would like to recognize Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau for his everlasting work on multiculturalism and diversity, because thanks to his leadership, we truly live in the best country in the world.

Eid-Mubarak to you and your family, and happy Multiculturalism day!
